Winter Garden Prep

Whether newbie green thumb or master gardener, it’s helpful to review what can be done to gardens now and through the winter so when springtime blooms, they look the best they can.

Most gardens at this point have been cleaned and plants protected. Other steps include mulching, pruning dormant trees and roses, improving soil with compost, and planning next year’s garden layout.

Mulch

Apply a thick layer of mulch around perennials, tender shrubs, and trees to insulate their roots from temperature fluctuations.

Protect Sensitive Plants

Wrap young trees or delicate shrubs with burlap and bring potted plants indoors to shield them from cold.

Cover Bare Soil

Place a tarp or mulch over empty garden beds to protect the soil and suppress weeds.

Maintain and Plan

Work compost into your beds to improve soil health for the next growing season.

Turn your compost piles to help them break down faster, making them ready for spring.

Decide on your garden's layout, choose new plants, and clean and sharpen your tools.

Other tasks include:

Soil Testing

Take the opportunity to get a soil test to see what nutrients are needed for the upcoming season.

Winter Gardening

Plant cold-hardy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale in a cold frame or cloche to have fresh greens throughout the winter.

Paying attention to gardens through the winter will pay dividends throughout the coming growing season.
