Crockett School Courtyard Garden
Educate and Inspire

Matthew Turowski and Kristine Geck shepherded this year-long project.

The 6 x 10 greenhouse will be used to help teach students about flower propagation, houseplants, and to start seeds for Spring.
“The Crockett Middle School Courtyard Garden comprises a greenhouse, raised beds and a garden built in a single day by parents, students, Nottingham Garden Club members, and staff,” says Kristine Geck, Nottingham Garden Club member and Crockett Middle School teacher. She and Matthew Turowski, who are co-advisors to the Crockett Middle School Environmental Club, shepherded the project.
Helping students appreciate their environment is one of the club’s missions.
The 60 sq. ft. greenhouse, four raised beds and freshly prepped garden reside in one of the school’s courtyards, easily accessible to students and teachers.
“The project is part of the school’s Environmental Program, which was reborn last school year,” Kristine says. The goal is to grow flowers and foods that will benefit students by creating a community garden for sharing.
To make it possible, the club applied for many grants and was gifted enough funds to purchase the supplies for the courtyard. “Thanks to all the amazing people who made this a reality!” she says.
Crockett Middle School Principal Praises Kristine Geck, Matthew Turowski
Crockett Middle School Principal Mr. Matthew Finacchio said, "When Hamilton created the Environmental EDP, I was not sure exactly what this EDP would entail. I am happy to say that Mrs. Geck and Mr. Turowski took the ball and ran with it. They have reached out to outside organizations such as the Nottingham Garden Club, solicited donations from area businesses and have literally put their sweat into creating a space where students can learn and appreciate nature. I think the best part may be that they took the lead, but the students have been part of the vision and build process every step of the way. Mrs. Geck and Mr. Turowski have been a true asset to Crockett's students and community."

Club Presdident Jay Derrico Says Project Reflects Club's Mission
"This project is in keeping with our mission--To reach out to our young. Our job is to learn and then share with the young what we have learned. Our goal is that these young nature enthusiasts will become the future protectors of our air, water and good earth."

Four raised planting beds will help seedlings from the greenhouse grow and mature into flowers and crops for sharing with students.
Honoring Mary Jo Mazotas for her love of the environment and the beauty it shares with us all.

Volunteers who donated their time and effort build the greenhouse and raised beds.
